Physiological Effect of Sweeping Grooming Movements in Macaque Monkey: Preliminary Data

چکیده
Grooming is a widespread behavior among non-human primates, characterized by rhythmic sweeps and plucking movements of the fingernails directed at addressing skin debris, spots, blemishes, ectoparasites or vegetation trapped in the fur [1]. Self-grooming is directed toward the individual’s own body (primarily those accessible parts, such as the arms and the legs), while allogrooming is carried out on others’ body parts either inaccessible or invisible to self-grooming [2,3]. All non-human primates devote a significant amount of time to grooming other individuals, with studies related to allogrooming among semi-free-ranging monkeys in their own natural habitat hypothesizing that this behavior has not only hygiene functions [4-11], but also that it is the most common affiliative relationship and social strategy employed to create and maintain relationships and reliable alliances against predators [12]. Moreover, allogrooming enhances relaxation and a sense of security [13], and reduces anxiety levels [4,14] by means of the decrement of the heart rate when receiving grooming [15], and of reduced cortisol levels during both passive [16] and active grooming [17].

Single Neurons in the Insular Cortex of a Macaque Monkey Respond to Skin Brushing: Preliminary Data of the Possible Representation of Pleasant Touch
Pleasant touch may serve as a foundation for affiliative behavior, providing a mechanism for the formation and maintenance of social bonds among conspecifics. In humans, this touch is usually referred to as the caress. Dynamic caressing performed on the hairy skin with a velocity of 1-10 cm/s is perceived as being pleasant and determines positive cardio-physiological effects. Furthermore, imagi...

Myocardial necrosis can be result from a number of causes including nutritional deficiencies, chemical and plant toxins, ischemia and metabolic disorder. The outcome of myocardial necrosis varies depending on the extent of the damage (Donald 2001, Jubb 1993, Radostits 1994, Vanvaleet 1986). Myocardial infarction without demonstrable of atherosclerosis were reported in a rhesus macaque (Gonder 1...
متن کاملTime-matched grooming in female primates? New analyses from two species
The parcelling model of reciprocity predicts that grooming partners will alternate between giving and receiving grooming within grooming bouts, and that each partner will perform approximately as much grooming as it receives within each bout (‘time matching’). Models of allogrooming based on biological markets theory predict that individuals of lower dominance rank will exchange grooming for to...
متن کاملHand kinematics during reaching and grasping in the macaque monkey.
In this paper, we develop an animal model of prehension movements by examining the kinematics of reaching and grasping in monkeys and by comparing the results to published data on humans. Hand movements were recorded in three dimensions in monkeys who were trained to either point at visual targets under unperturbed and perturbed conditions, or to reach and grasp 3-D objects. The results reveale...
متن کاملArm movements induced by electrical microstimulation in the superior colliculus of the macaque monkey.
Neuronal activity in the deep layers of the macaque (Macaca mulatta) superior colliculus (SC) and the underlying reticular formation is correlated with the initiation and execution of arm movements (Werner, 1993). Although the correlation of this activity with EMGs of proximal arm muscles is as strong as in motor cortex (Werner et al., 1997a; Stuphorn et al., 1999), little is known about the in...
